Career Change

6 Jun

Yesterday I blogged about that article written about me and my career in engineering in the Workforce Diversity Magazine. The funny thing about that is that two days after I received the published magazine in my hands, it was my last day of work at my engineering job.

For those of you who don’t already know, I have decided to leave engineering (at least for now) and join Teach for America.

Most people I have mentioned this career 180 to think I am absolutely crazy, especially leaving the space systems industry to teach in an inner city school. Don’t get me wrong, I have thoroughly enjoyed the last four years as a design engineer working on space hardware, but ultimately what led me to this decision where my own experiences having gone through the NY/NJ public school systems. The lack of quality education in the public school system is something I personally suffered from and want to do my part in changing. I feel like now that I have some formal engineering training, I can use my enthusiasm and love for engineering and science to inspire students to dream big and reach goals they might have never thought were attainable.

I know, I sound like a walking cliche. I don’t expect this challenge to be a walk in the park but I am ready to pour my heart and soul into this because it is a cause I truly believe in.

I’ll be teaching high school physics in NYC  this fall. Wish me luck!
